What Does The Bible Say About Spiritual Warfare?

Spiritual warfare is a Christian belief that involves battling against evil forces that seek to oppose God’s plans. It is rooted in the understanding that spiritual forces actively fight against God’s work and His people on a daily basis.

If you are a Christian, it’s important to recognize this battle so that you can be prepared for the enemy’s attacks!

The reality is: There is a spiritual war going on that is fighting for YOUR heart and soul. The forces of evil are desperately trying to tear us away from God and separate us from Our Creator whether we are aware of it or not…

Some of the most influential people in the Bible and EVEN Jesus experienced spiritual warfare and through their stories we can see what they did to resist and overcome evil.

To gain a deeper understanding, we must turn to the Bible…

A Biblical Perspective on Spiritual Warfare

Put on the Full Armor of God to Protect You

Did you ever hear of a soldier going into a battle with no armor? No way, that would be a death trap.

In the same way, going into the spiritual battle without armor would leave you unprotected against Satan and his schemes.

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

Ephesians 6:10-12

The armor: belt of truth, breastplate of righteousness, shield of faith, and helmet of salvation.

Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

Ephesians 6:13-17

Fight With the Right Weapons

If you had the opportunity to fight with more powerful weapons than your enemy, would you?

Using God’s Word and the power of the Holy Spirit as weapons against evil can help us overcome negative influences in our minds and live according to God’s plan for us.

For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.

2 Corinthians 10:3-5

Stay Alert for the Enemy is Always Near

Are you aware of your spiritual surroundings?

A lion patiently observes its prey and approaches stealthily when it least expects…we need to be alert at all times.

In order to defeat your enemy in battle, you must know their tactics. Read this article to better understand who your enemy is.

Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. 1 Peter 5:8

Make Sure Your on the Winning Team

Would you go into a battle knowing that you were going to lose?

GOOD NEWS: The greatest battle in history has already been won by God!

Through Jesus’ death on the cross and His resurrection, we can be certain that He has triumphed over Satan and the forces of evil.

I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world. John 16:33

And having disarmed the powers and authorities, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross. Colossians 2:15

Don’t Give Up Under Pressure

When the going gets tough, and you don’t want to fight anymore, don’t give up! Submit yourself to God and he promises that the devil will flee.

Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. James 4:7

Biblical Examples of Spiritual Warfare

Jesus was Tempted in the Wilderness

Jesus resisted Satan’s temptations by quoting Scripture and remembering what God said. Satan is called “The Father of Lies” (John 8:44) and is constantly trying to twist the truth to get us to doubt and turn away from God.

We must be like Jesus and use scripture to fight against him!

After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread. Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’

Matthew 4:2-4

The Story of Job

In the midst of many trials and suffering, Job combats spiritual warfare through faith, integrity, perseverance, and worship to God.

He is a great example of what it means to stay vigilant against Satan.

Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked I will depart. The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away; may the name of the Lord be praised.

Job 1:21

Conclusion: Stand Firm in the Battle

Spiritual warfare is the reality for every believer, but remember: God gave us the weapons to overcome and we are not meant to fight alone. Don’t forget to intentionally pick your teammates wisely, spiritual friendships are crucial to survive!

By putting on the full armor of God, using his Word as our weapon, and remembering that the ultimate victory has already won through Jesus, the Devil doesn’t stand a chance!

Take heart – no matter what battle you are facing, God’s power is greater. Stay faithful, alert, and never give up on yourself or God!
