Do you feel like life is coming at you from every angle?
Work stress, relationship issues, uncertainty, and fear. It can feel like you’re losing a battle you didn’t even realize you were fighting.
The Bible says that is because you are.
In a recent sermon at Southern Connecticut Church of Christ, Quentin Goodman walked through one of the most powerful passages in the New Testament.
It is about spiritual warfare and the armor of God. And it would change how you see everything.

You Are in a Real Battle
Most people think their biggest problems are other people. A difficult boss. A frustrating family member. A friend who let them down.
But the Apostle Paul says the real enemy is not human.
“For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.”
Ephesians 6:12 (NIV)
This is not a metaphor. Paul is describing an organized, strategic spiritual enemy. There are ranks. There is a chain of command. And at the top is Satan.
Understanding the armor of God starts here. You cannot put on the right gear if you do not know what you are fighting.

Directly from God
Here is something most people miss about the armor of God. Paul did not come up with these images. He pulled them straight from the prophet Isaiah.
- The breastplate of righteousness comes from Isaiah 59:17.
- The belt of faithfulness comes from Isaiah 11.
- The sword of the Spirit comes from Isaiah 49:2.
“He made my mouth like a sharpened sword, in the shadow of his hand he hid me.”
Isaiah 49:2 (NIV)
This means when you put on the armor of God, you are not reaching for something weak or uncertain. You are putting on the very armor that God himself wears when he goes to war. God has never lost a battle. Not once.

What each piece means
Paul lists six pieces of armor in Ephesians 6:14-17. Each one has a practical meaning for how you live every day.
- The belt of truth holds everything together. When you abandon honesty and integrity, the rest falls apart.
- The breastplate of righteousness is about your character. Who you are when no one is watching. A clean conscience is one of your greatest defenses against the enemy.
- The shoes of the gospel of peace mean you move through the world with confidence. You carry good news wherever you go.
- The shield of faith is used to stop the enemy’s attacks before they reach you. Roman soldiers dipped their large leather shields in water to put out flaming arrows. Faith does the same thing for your mind and heart.
- The helmet of salvation protects your thinking. Many attacks start in the mind.
- The sword of the Spirit is the Word of God. It is the only offensive weapon on the list. You are not just defending. You are advancing.
“Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”
Ephesians 6:17 (NIV)

Together
Paul is not writing to one person. He is writing to an entire church.
Think about how Roman soldiers fought. They locked their shields together in a formation called the testudo. The soldiers in front raised their shields forward. The soldiers in the middle raised theirs overhead. The result was an impenetrable wall that no arrow could break through.
A single soldier who steps out of formation leaves his back exposed. No matter how strong he is, he cannot cover every angle alone.
The same is true for Christians.
“And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together.”
Hebrews 10:24-25 (NIV)
You were not meant to fight this battle alone. When you isolate yourself from community, you leave yourself open. When you stay connected and fight together, Satan cannot find a weak point.

Stand Firm
The armor of God meaning comes down to one simple command that Paul repeats: stand.
Not retreat. Not give up. Stand.
The world is dark. But you are not defenseless. God has given you his own armor. He has placed you in a community of believers. And the battle is already won in Christ.
Put on the armor. Lock shields with your church family. And stand firm.
