The Greek word “τετέλεσται” (tetelestai) is Jesus’s last word on the cross, according to John. Itetelestai is commonly translated to “It is finished“.
Tetelestai means to bring to a close, to finish, and to complete. It is originated from the bible verse John 19:30.
30 When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.” With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
John 19:30
What did Jesus mean when he said, “It is finished”?
Here are a few popular explanations.
1. Fulfilling God’s promise
In the Old Testament, the prophet Isaiah talked about a righteous servant suffering for other’s wrongdoings to get them saved.
But he was pierced for our transgressions,
Isaiah 53:5
he was crushed for our iniquities;
the punishment that brought us peace was on him,
and by his wounds we are healed.
Jesus fulfilled God’s promise of redeeming people by dying on the cross. He finished the tasks God had given him. He lived the way.

2. Paid in Full
In the ancient Middle East, the word tetelestai was often written on receipts when debt was paid. It signifies a complete transaction.
When Jesus cried out “it is finished” on the cross, he could mean the debt of sin is now fully paid by suffering and death on the cross.
For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in[a] Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 6:23

He died and then came back to life. His power was over these forces and offered eternal lives to anyone believing in him.
