Are you ever too scared to ask a question? Are you worried about how people might react? Asking questions takes courage.
Bartimaeus is a blind beggar who Jesus healed. The story of Bartimaeus is told in the Gospel of Mark 10:46–52.
What’s so special about Bartimaeus? He didn’t hold back when he got a chance to talk to Jesus. Let’s see what he did.

A Bold Question
Bartimaeus heard that Jesus was coming. What did he do? He shouted, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!”
People told him to shut up, but Bartimaeus didn’t. Instead, he shouted louder.
“Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!”
That caught Jesus’s attention. Jesus asked him, “What do you want me to do for you?” Bartimaeus boldly replied, “Rabbi, I want to see.”
And just like that, his wish came true. Now, he can see.

Why did Jesus Ask?
If Jesus knew what Bartimaeus wanted, why did he still ask, “What do you want me to do for you?”
Here’s why:
- Faith in action: Jesus wanted us to speak out loud with faith. By saying, “I want to see,” Bartimaeus also believed that Jesus could heal him.
- Persistence: Jesus was touched by Bartimaeus’s persistence despite everyone trying to stop him. He gave him a chance to say what he wanted.
- Giving Glory to God: By stating his belief in Jesus’ power, Bartimaeus also expressed his faith in Jesus being the Messiah.

What are your Questions?
Like Bartimaeus, we can bring our needs and wants to God. Sometimes, we hesitate, wondering if our requests are too small or unimportant. But Jesus reminds us in Matthew 10:29-31 that God cares deeply for us.
29 Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care. 30 And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. 31 So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.
