What is the will of God?

When life feels uncertain and the world around us seems out of control, it’s easy to wonder if there’s any purpose behind it all. The Bible reminds us that nothing is random – God has a plan. His purposes stretch from nations and history to our lives.

In this article, we will look at God’s will in 3 ways:

  1. God’s plan for you
  2. Living out His plan
  3. Making the right decision

God has a plan for you

Turning on the news, you will get the impression that this world is a wild mess. However, God has a plan for this world he created.

In him we were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will.

Ephesians 1:11 (NIV)

The plan is not just for this world and the countries. He has a plan for everyone, including you and me.

When preaching to the people in Athens, Paul said the following about God.

From one man he made all the nations, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he marked out their appointed times in history and the boundaries of their lands.

Acts 13:48 (NIV)

According to the Bible, the fact that you are here on this planet Earth at this particular time is not an accident. It is God who put you here.

But why?

Living out God’s plan

How can you trust God even when circumstances don’t make sense?

11 For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

Jeremiah 29:11

The life of Joseph is a perfect example of living out God’s plan. (Genesis 37-50)

  1. His brothers, out of jealousy, sold him into salvary in Egypt.
  2. Despite this, he rose to power in Egypt by providing good services to the Pharaoh.
  3. When famine struck, Joseph’s brothers came to Egypt for food. Instead of seeking revenge, Joseph recognized God’s plan:

For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

Genesis 50:20

God’s hand is guiding even in betrayal and suffering. But God’s plan isn’t just about the big picture. It also involves the choices we make every day.

God wants us to make the right decision

After his father died, Solomon became King. He was young and inexperienced. God appeared in his dream and promised to give him anything he asked. Instead of asking for power and wealth, Solomon asked for wisdom and discernment to govern rightly.

God was pleased with his choice:

I will do what you have asked. I will give you a wise and discerning heart, so that there will never have been anyone like you, nor will there ever be.

1 Kings 3:12

He also gave Solomon riches and honor that no one had ever seen.

Making the right decision is not easy. In a split second, Solomon had to decide whether to make a wish that would benefit his people or himself. When he made the right decision, God also took care of his personal life, granting him riches and honor.

Following God’s will

God’s plan is bigger than the chaos around us. He invites us to trust his timing and make the right choice. And we will find hope, purpose, and peace that no circumstances can take away.
