Faith in Action
Kevin Abrokwah
“Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.”
Hebrews 11:1
Faith like many pillars of discipleship is easier said than done but has also been done many times before. I stumbled across Hebrews 11 within another devotional verse I was reading and decided to dive deeper and get a better sense of the context. What I found was a profound reminder about how God works when we have faith in him.
Hebrews goes on to give countless examples of faith (Hebrews 11:1-39). Starting with Abel having faith and giving a good offering to God and being commended as righteous (V. 4). Noah when warned about things not seen through holy fear and faith built an ark to save his family (V.7). Abraham when tested was willing to sacrifice his only son that God himself promised (V.17). Moses by faith chose to not live a life of luxury and sin but rather leave Egypt because he saw him who was invisible and the reward ahead (V. 24-28). The walls of Jericho fell after 7 days because of faith (V.30).
It keeps going!
- “By Faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command” (V3)
- “By Faith Abel still speaks, even though he is dead” (V4b)
- “By faith Enoch was taken from this life, so that he did not experience death” (V5)
- “By faith Moses’ parents hid him for three months after he was born” (v23)
- “By faith the people passed through the Red Sea as on dry land” (v29)
32 And what more shall I say? I do not have time to tell about Gideon, Barak, Samson and Jephthah, about David and Samuel and the prophets, 33 who through faith conquered kingdoms, administered justice, and gained what was promised; who shut the mouths of lions, 34 quenched the fury of the flames, and escaped the edge of the sword; whose weakness was turned to strength; and who became powerful in battle and routed foreign armies.
Hebrews 11:32-34
Q: What are some of your “by faith” moments in the past?
Q: What is going to be your “by faith” moment now?
What will the “great cloud of witnesses” write about your faith? What will be said God did through you “by faith“?
Fill in the blank:
By Faith [Your name] did [whatever your faith is leading you to do]
Often times, faith calls for movement in prayer, fasting, living righteously and continually seeking and listening for God. Faith wasn’t just flipped on when needed in big moments but a daily walk. Noah was a righteous man before the warning but during the process of building he remained righteous and faithful despite being mocked for his efforts. Having faith includes obedience to where God is calling you and continually seeking God for wisdom and guidance as you follow him. Lastly, faith in action can also mean no action at all. In Psalm 37:7 David writes “Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him; do not fret when people succeed in their ways, when they carry out their wicked schemes.”. When you find yourself struggling to have faith in what God is doing remember what he as already done for you, what he has done for all of the people mentioned in Hebrews 11, and that he will be with you through the process Psalm 23:4.
Reflect on times where God has prompted you to go or be still and what was the result when you obeyed
Q: Is it harder to have faith in being told to go or being told to be still?
Q: What situations in your life need “more” faith?
Q: How does faith and fear play in your walk with God?
