One Another Class Series: Class 3

No Gravatar
We did the third class in the “One Another” series on Tuesday.
To illustrate the different kinds of “One Another” relationships, the guys first played a couple rounds of the “Balance” game – where the goal is to knock the other guy off balance without losing your own… Then, Kent, Randy, Fred, Corey and Gil matched strengths in arm-wrestling. I wish the pictures below could capture all the… hootin’ an’ a hollerin’ going on as well – it was a blast and a fun way to kick off the class…
Some of the key points we covered…
  • We covered chapters 6, 9, and 10 in the One Another book.
  • After the greatest commandment of loving our God with all our heart, mind, soul, and strength is to love our neighbor as our self – indicating the relevant importance of “One Another” relationships.
  • With that in mind, we need to accept responsibility for one another, and not assume it is someone else’s job, or be so pre-occupied with our own needs that we neglect one another.
  • Regardless of results, the motivation and goals of teaching, admonishing, encouraging, or spurring one another on is for sole benefit of the recipient to grow, mature, and transform more into the likeness of Christ.

I hope everyone had as good a time in the class as I had leading it!

- Eric

E-mail Announcement Subscriptions

No Gravatar

Hello…

As you may know I am always working on making the website easier to use, and one feature we use often are mass mailings.  However, we also use free plug-ins to the site to keep costs down…and you get what you pay for!

So, I have switched to a new mailing plug-in, which works best with those who subscribe to the mailings.

If you want to get E-mails about what is going on in the church locally, please subscribe.  These announcements are usually of a local nature, whether cancellations, prayers needed, upcoming event reminders or just family news.

Please log in to the site, then click the following button on the right-hand side of the page:

SubscribeClip2

Once you select that, you will be registered to receive E-mails as a subscriber.

If you don’t want to receive E-mails, send an E-mail to blogadmin@sctcoc.org requesting to be removed.

Thanks – Eric Smith

All Church Devo – Topic: Worship

No Gravatar

The Glory of GodWell, we had the Devo last night, and to say that it was amazing is an understatement!  Having been the one to put it together, I struggled to not be a hypocrite…  The vision for the devotional was to teach a little about and encouage complete God-focused worship.  So, throughout the preparation and the organization I had to continually pray to remember that I am powerless and as my main message stated: “It’s All About God!” – and my part is the least of it.

God certainly proved it!   The reading of the Psalms, the prayers, and music were incredibly moving as we got to share a unified heart for God last night.

I think we also learned that we can step out a bit more in the nature of our worship.  The “Amen” song blew me away.  In my finite knowledge and faith, I was unsure how it would work.  (For those who were not there, I played some repeating chords on my guitar and we would sing an “Amen” refrain all together, and then I would pick the chords and anyone in the congregation could do as they choose: sing a Psalm, sing their own prayer, read a psalm, pray, dance, whatever.  Then we would all come back together singing Amen!)  I was absolutely blown away at the beauty of this free-form worship.  It was hard to play the guitar and try to wipe my nose at the same time as the tears flowed from the outpuring of hearts in the prayers and wonderful singing of Psalms and prayers!

I am so encouraged to have been part of a worship in a church that truly loves God.

If you were there, and were likewise encourgaged, please leave a comment.

Here is the link to a .pdf document of the notes from the message at the devo:

Scripture Memory

Scripture Memory

So we’ve kicked off a new class series.  Part of the series involves Memory Scriptures.  If you’re anything like me, I sometimes still get those nightmares where it is test time and I am doomed to fail because I didn’t do my studying!  (shudder).   Scripture memory is different though than preparing for academic tests.  An academic test is simply a preparation for real-world situations where you will need to know your subject material.  The tests where Scripture memory is required occur every single day!

One fun way I like to test my memory is to get one or more people who are memorizing the same Scripture, and go around to each of us, each saying the next word of the Scripture.  If anyone gets it wrong, you have to start over with a different person in the group.  Once the group can get through the Scripture perfectly 2 or 3 times, you are all probably set.  This is also fun to do with children!

A couple good links are here and here.

What are some things that help you memorize Scripture?  Comment on this post with your thoughts!
